The Sunday Bake Table
A long table of one-off bakes from 8am. Cash, card or a good story. Gone by ten, most weeks.
hello from Gertrude Lane
Marlow & Fig is a neighbourhood café in the back streets of Fitzroy. We roast our own beans, bake every morning and never hurry anyone out of the courtyard.
the ones people order twice
Everything is made here, from the fig syrup to the croissant butter. See the full menu

our story
In 2017, Tess Marlow and Jun Fig-Tanaka took over an old print workshop on Gertrude Lane with a five-kilo roaster and no real plan beyond making the café they wanted to sit in.
Eight years on, the roaster is bigger and the queue is longer, but the idea is the same: careful coffee, generous plates, and room to stay as long as you like.
roasted out the back
We roast twice a week in small batches and buy directly from four farms we have visited. Take a bag home, or let us post it.
Brazil & Colombia. Chocolate, hazelnut, soft and sweet with milk.
Washed. Peach, jasmine and black tea. Lovely as a filter.
Sugarcane process. Caramel and red apple, no compromise.

more than coffee
A long table of one-off bakes from 8am. Cash, card or a good story. Gone by ten, most weeks.
Taste four new coffees with our roaster, Jun. Twelve seats, $25, includes a bag to take home.
Acoustic sets from local musicians in the back courtyard. Dogs and prams very welcome.
kind words
★★★★★
“The kind of place where they remember your order by the second visit. The hotcakes are ridiculous.”
★★★★★
“Best flat white north of the river, and I do not say that lightly. The courtyard is a little oasis.”
★★★★★
“We brought the dog, the pram and my mother-in-law. All three were made to feel at home.”
